Background of the Study
Public speaking in Nigeria is a domain where phonological assimilation—the process by which speech sounds become more similar to neighboring sounds—plays a vital role in enhancing clarity and audience engagement. This study compares the phonological assimilation patterns in speeches delivered by Hausa and Yoruba speakers, two major linguistic groups in Nigeria (Sani, 2023). Hausa speakers often exhibit assimilation in consonant clusters and vowel transitions, while Yoruba speakers tend to display assimilation through tonal adjustments and vowel harmony. The research investigates how these processes facilitate smoother speech delivery and contribute to the distinct rhetorical styles of each group. By analyzing recorded speeches, the study aims to identify systematic patterns of assimilation and assess their impact on intelligibility and persuasive effectiveness. Furthermore, it considers the influence of audience expectations and cultural communication norms on phonological adaptation, contributing to our understanding of effective public speaking practices in Nigeria (Adebayo, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of phonological assimilation in public speaking, there is limited comparative research on how this phenomenon varies between Hausa and Yoruba speakers. Differences in assimilation patterns may lead to varying degrees of clarity and audience engagement, yet current studies do not adequately address these variations (Sani, 2023). This lack of systematic analysis limits our understanding of how phonological adjustments influence public communication and may impede efforts to improve speaking effectiveness in multicultural settings (Adebayo, 2024). This study seeks to bridge the gap by comparing phonological assimilation in the speeches of Hausa and Yoruba speakers, thereby providing insights for training and performance enhancement (Chinwe, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To identify assimilation patterns in Hausa and Yoruba public speeches.

  • To compare their effects on speech clarity and audience reception.

  • To recommend strategies for improving phonological adaptation in public speaking.

Research Questions:

  • What are the key assimilation patterns in Hausa and Yoruba speeches?

  • How do these patterns affect public understanding?

  • What strategies can enhance effective phonological assimilation?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it compares phonological assimilation in Nigerian public speaking, shedding light on how linguistic processes impact communication effectiveness. The findings will inform public speaking training, linguistic research, and communication strategies in multicultural environments, ultimately enhancing the quality of oral presentations (Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to analyzing public speeches by Hausa and Yoruba speakers and does not include other ethnic groups or media formats.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Phonological Assimilation: The process by which sounds become more similar to adjacent sounds.

  • Public Speaking: Formal oral presentations delivered in front of an audience.

  • Intelligibility: The clarity with which speech is understood by listeners.
